If you are planning an extended trip across the vastness that is the USA for your Golden Gap Year, we're fairly sure you will want to include some of the amazing National Parks that America has to offer.  The great challenge though is knowing which Park to visit - sure we all know about the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Yellowstone, but they are just the tip of the iceberg!  Hopefully after reading our review and guide to the top National Parks in America you'll be a little wiser.

Canyonlands, Utah

Mountains, red-rock canyons and deserts are found in this moonscape-like region. Rugged and wild this park is best suited to those who like things a bit rough and ready. Be prepared for lots of hiking or biking to get the best out this amazing park.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Stunning beachlines, salt marshes and forests are found on Cape Cod’s seafront. This park caters well for tourists whether you want to get active and hike, bike or swim or just relax on the beach and enjoy the view.

Denali, Alaska

Home to caribou, bear and moose – this national park will draw the wildlife watchers out in crowds. Denali is also home to North America’s tallest mountain – Mount McKinley. The scenic Kenai Fjords are also worth a visit.

Lake Powell, Utah and Arizona

A 180 mile long man-made flooded canyon that is best viewed by canoe! Otherwise hire a houseboat and settle in for some fishing.

Rocky Mountains, Colorado

With over 300 miles of trail there are hikes for all abilities here in one of America’s most well known national parks. Like Cape Cod, a trip to the Rocky Mountains can be as hard or as easy as you can manage, with a huge range of other activities on offer in the many resorts in the region.

Volcanoes in Hawaii

Visit the Mauna Loa, an active volcano and the largest volcano on earth. It’s most recent eruption was in 1984. Travel there if you dare! Kilauea is another volcano to visit. Unlike Mauna Loa this one constantly spews out lava although you can still drive around the base easily.

The Everglades, Florida

A sub tropical wetland region of the US with murky swamps full of alligators, mangrove forests and manatees.

Applachian Trail, New England

An infamous walking route from Maine to Georgia. Whether you’re experienced or a novice, this trail is suitable for all levels.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Picture alpine meadows, glistening clear lakes, woody green forests framed by mountains and you have Glacier Park. Stay in a cosy log cabin and spend your days hiking the numerous trails in the area.

Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

Learn about American history whilst looking at the epic carved sculptures of Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Famous for Yogi Bear of course! Although bears here may not be as friendly. Other than bears this park houses wolves, elk, moose and bison plus hot springs and erupting geysers.

Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico

Underneath the prickly pear arid landscape of the Chichuahuan desert and Guadalupe mountains are more than 300 caves waiting to be explored. The caves have been formed by a gradual deposit of sulphuric acid dissolving the limestone rock.
