Alternative Holidays - the Baltic States

Editor

If you are looking for an alternative holiday or short break, a trip to the little known Baltic States of Europe – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is well worth it - especially if you enjoy exploring medieval towns and unspoilt walking trails.

Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. There are over 40 churches plus many restaurants, museums and shops to wander around passing the time. Vilnius’ beautiful Old Quarter is a must see on a trip here. It is one of the largest Old Quarters preserved in Europe and still maintains an air of untouched beauty. Architectural styles are diverse – Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance being the main periods. Gediminas Castle and Cathedral Square form the gateway to the historic part of the capital and are also an attraction in their own right. Further on near the port city of Klaipeda is the Curonian Spit – a huge 98km long peninsula dominated by forests and sand dunes, a perfect spot to laze on the sandy white beaches and relax.

Riga, Latvia

Most people will be familiar with Riga – Latvia’s capital town. Riga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its extensive art nouveau architecture – some of the best in the world. Places of note to explore include the Dom Cathedral; the largest cathedral in the Baltic States, Riga Castle which is home to both the Museum of Foreign Art and the Museum of Latvian History and St Peter’s Church. Ease weary feet by kicking back and drinking Balzams (like mulled wine) in a cosy candlelit bar and watch the world go by.

Sigulda, Latvia

Tired of cityscapes? Head onto Sigulda 50km out of Riga. Enchanting Sigulda sits on the Gauja Valley edge with steep rocks and deep caves on both sides. Whether you enjoy walking, climbing or caving, there will be something here for you. Too much effort? Head to the numerous spas on offer.

Tallin, Estonia

Finally – Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Argue between friends over which of the Baltic State’s Old Quarters is the best. Tallinn also boasts a UNESCO World Heritage stamp because of its 14th and 15th century architectural significance. If you have the money its well worth hiring a yacht for a tour of Tallinn Bay. If not, there’s plenty of low key restaurants and bars to while away the time in too.
